Registering a Foreign Death for Inheritance in Iran

When an Iranian national dies abroad, the local death certificate is an essential record but does not necessarily update the Iranian civil register. Iranian death registration is often the gateway to the domestic succession certificate (enhesar-e verasat), but it is not itself the certificate and does not transfer or release estate assets.

Official Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance directs the declarant to submit the death-registration request through Mikhak and provide the original foreign death certificate, the deceased's Iranian identity documents and the declarant's Iranian identity document. Where the death occurred in a third country, the foreign record may need translation or confirmation through the competent Iranian mission. The exact consular procedure should be checked with the mission handling the request.

Names, parentage, dates, place of birth and Iranian identity numbers should be compared before submission. A mismatch between the foreign certificate and Iranian records may prevent automated matching or create an incorrect succession certificate. Depending on the issue, a consular correction, civil-registration application or judicial decision may be needed rather than an informal translation change.

Under the current 2025 succession-certificate regulation, the Civil Registration Organization prepares the Iranian certificate electronically after death registration using available official data and provides a statutory objection route. Heirs should still verify the listed heirs and shares. Foreign family events, incomplete Iranian records, disputed relationships or an older death may require additional documents and a different procedural step.
